IE: And you kind of you assume that your significant other will go along with your moods and wait. But it didn’t hap- pen like that with your missus? TRO: Yeah It’s very hard if you choose a role in life where you’re away a lot, basi- cally. You could be I a band, or you could be in the army, or you could be working night shifts or away on an oil rig. When the same place now, and it’s all good. So you adjust, I suppose, don’t you? I recog- nize the marital strife that a lot of people go through now, and I never want to be self-indulgent about it. Because I felt it deeply, and still do But your normality changes into new systems, new ways of working. So that was kind of hard for me, and a very steep price to pay. And I found it hard and still do. more aware of myself, and engaged with other people. I have my priorities much more in order than I ever did, so out of that difficult situation, a lot of good did eventually come. IE: Did you go through clinical depres- sion during all this? TRO: I dunno. I’ve never been diagnosed with it, but I’ve definitely had tendencies in that direction for maybe 25 years. And I hadn’t really recognized that or dealt with it until the last three or four years, and that was difficult for the other guys in the band. Now I’m much better at keeping that stuff in check. IE: Grace Slick once told me that — since people are living longer, healthier lives now — that old concept of staying with one person, forever and ever, Amen, no longer holds true. You may wind up with two or three life partners along the path. TRO: Yeah. Well, it’s a big subject. But I think that the sooner we stop selling the impossible fairy tale of falling in love at 18 and everything is a blissful dream for the next 70 years, well, I mean, it’s not impossible. People do it, and I really respect the work that goes into it. But for the many, many people that that doesn’t work out for, to feel judged by society TRO: Obviously, you moved out. But where did you go? Did you crash at your studio, Sea Fog? TRO: Yeah. Pretty much. I lived above my studio for a few months.
