COVER STORY:
WILLIAM PATRICK CORGAN
Smashing Pumpkins anchor Billy Corgan –
who has recently re-dubbed himself with the more
mature moniker of William Patrick Corgan, under
which he just released the skeletal, Rick Rubin-pro-
duced solo set Oglilala, one of his best albums in
ages – has been powering through many changes
in his personal life. He just turned 50. Nearly two
years ago, he became a father himself to son
Augustus, with his significant other Chloe Mendel
(both are prominently featured on the Oglilala
album cover photograph). "Billy" talked to Tom
Lanham how he came to make his first "solo"
album.

HELLO MY NAME IS...CHRIS
06
After nearly 55 years in the tumultuous music business,
Chris Hillman has no illusions about its cold, harsh reality.
And currently, at 72, this renowned ex-Byrd/Flying Burrito
Brother is delighted to see his career on the upswing again, via
a great new solo set on Rounder, Bidin’ My Time, produced by
none other than the lifelong Byrds booster Tom Petty (who
tragically passed away shortly after this interview was con-
ducted). Stellar guest stars include former bandmate David
Crosby, his old Byrds buddy Roger McGuinn, Petty himself,
and members of the Heartbreakers. Tom Lanham talked to the
Hall Of Famer.

THE VIOLENT FEMMES
20
Sweet Home
Milwaukee's Violent Femmes, reunited in 2013, are tour-
ing behind their new album We Can Do Anything, powered by
40 years of cassette demos and unfinished music from Gordon
Gano's vast musical archives. Despite the smattering of music
scattered over 3 decades, the Femmes new album sounds sur-
prisingly fresh and cohesive. Kelley Simms talked to longtime
co-founder Brian Ritchie.
