Robby longtime drummer Mike Malinin , who departed in 2013 – sound more rejuvenated than ever , thirty years into their Grammy-nominated , multi-platinum career . one of our bands , The Juliet Dagger , had done some shows and recordings with Shonen Knife in Japan , so we got to meet Naoko and their clan of folks there , and they had just left their old management and didn ’ t really have a label . So they asked us if we ’ d be interested in putting out a Shonen Knife record in 2007 , I think it was . And I think we ’ re probably on our eighth release with them now , and Naoko ’ s just the best . Funny story – we were out with Goo Goo Dolls doing some stuff , and we had brought Shonen Knife back here to do a tour . But we ended up having some problems with one of our techs on the tour , so we had to send him home . And I just happened to have that month off , so I just jumped behind the wheel of their van and drove

IE : You formed Good Charamel in 2003 , but initially only for local bands . How did you expand to Japan ? ROBBY TAKAC : When we started , it was all local bands here in Buffalo , and we released probably six or seven records from some local bands . And what I realized was that having a label in your home town was awesome , because you get to help out your home town . But it also freaks everybody out , because no one can understand why you only signed those three bands , because they ’ re not nearly as good as their band . That kind of thing . So it started to get a little freaky for me here . But |
around the entire U . S . with Shonen knife , my wife , and a couple of roadies , and we had a great time and got to be fast friends . So I happened upon this relationship at a great time in my life , to feel that type of energy . The type of energy I experience with Goo Goo Dolls is obviously awesome . But there ’ s another kind of energy that happens in the indie-band realm where Shonen Knife revolves , and that was something I really needed to remember at that time in my life .
