Hugh Syme’ s new interpretive artwork will fascinate anyone who has stared at his Rush covers since childhood, albeit with a twinge of regret over the prominent use of AI by such a gifted designer.
The Deluxe vinyl set includes a hardback book with liner notes, lustrous photos, Syme’ s artwork, and a moving essay by David Fricke that parallels
the musical arc of R50. The story tracks the Canadian heroes from their first show in the US to their final exit at the Forum, with anecdotes from Lee and Lifeson woven throughout. A Super Deluxe set includes additional mementos, chief among which is a 100-page graphic novel that chronicles conversations over drinks between Lee and Lifeson while they listen through the Rush catalog in order and reminisce. Other voices include producers Terry Brown, Peter Collins, and Nick Raskulinecz. Peart is represented by anecdotes from vintage interviews, remembered conversations, and fond comments from his bandmates.“ That’ s what I miss most, you know … his laugh,” says Lee.“ Don’ t make me cry again, Ged,” responds Lifeson. Despite memories of maddening trials like committing the unwieldy“ La Villa Strangiato” to tape, laughter and tightly-knit brotherhood are the main expressions throughout the story.
