all for using anything at hand , really , but when we ’ d go on tour , it was a different matter — I mean , we didn ’ t take any Tupperware with us on tour . But going back to the idea of just two people onstage , me and Stephen at first , and we could argue enough between us — there was no use having any other members in the band . And on early performances , we had a cassette machine on the stage with backing tracks on it , so they would be a combination of our
Tupperware recorded loops , more bits and pieces of drums made into loops , and then recorded off onto a cassette , and also on there would be any kind of bass parts that I ’ d cobbled together , using either a bass or a guitar . And then , over the top of that , Stephen would be playing his keyboard with effects pedals plugged into it , and for quite a number of years , I would also play guitar onstage , and I was roped into singing . I didn ’ t sing at first — I was more interested in making the noises , you know ? But one day Stephen recorded me singing “ Let ’ s Go To the Hop ,” and he liked the fact that I sang more in tune than he did , probably by not much . So yeah , then I ended up becoming the singer .
IE : One of your latest singles , “ Again , I Wait
For the World ,” is actually quite old , right ? NA : Yeah . The new single , “ Again , I Wait For the World ,” started life in 1979 and was never finished — never could I get my head around finishing it . And I was in an art college band that ran parallel times to Blancmange , and Stephen came down a couple of times to play keyboards with us . So anyway , this song started hen , but I don ’ t think it ever had a fully-formed structure . And it hadn ’ t really been a monkey on my back
because I hadn ’ t really thought about it much . But over the years , it kept coming into my head that it was quite a good groove , and then last year it clicked , and I had another Blancmange epiphany moment , and I went into the studio and worked out the remaining parts and restructured it . And at the beginning of this year , I went down to Benge ’ s studio down in Cornwall — the guy I work with on all the Blancmange projects and also on the Fader projects , and we finished it . It didn ’ t take long to do , and it probably sounds like it didn ’ t take long , either . So 45 years later , yeah ! I ’ ve got a new old single !
