COVER STORY: DOROTHY
Nearly two years ago uber producer and song-
writer Linda Perry believed the Dorothy story was
just beginning, and she wondered why others did-
n’t hear the untapped potential in Dorothy
Martin’s truly powerhouse voice. So she took the
straggler under her wing, in every way possible,
by offering to not only manage her, but produce,
engineer, and co-write every track on her new 28
Days in the Valley album for Jay Z’s swank Roc
Nation imprint. And Perry pummeled her protégé
with tough love – no hangovers in the studio on
her watch, she insisted. Sobriety was the only way
forward. “She told me, ‘When I look at you I see a
goddess, a strong woman who’s also very sensi-
tive,’” Martin recalls. “so we decided to do this
record together, and I’m just so grateful.”
When Linda and I got in touch, she had
wrapped up some stuff, and she had free time.”
The time was right to give up drinking, as well. “I
had wanted to quit for a long time, so eventually I
did, and now I feel great,” she says. “But that does-
n’t mean that it’s easy. I have days that are very dif-
ficult because I wasn’t dealing with my emotions
for years. Tom Lanham got Dorothy's amazing
backstory.

HELLO MY NAME IS JONATHAN
Media
To any fans clamoring for a solo album from him, Korn
bandleader Jonathan Davis humbly apologizes. He conceived
his new world-music-influenced foray Black Labyrinth a full
decade ago; he sighs, fully intending to release it at the time.
“But then shit happened – I pushed the record back because I
always had to keep the Korn train rolling,” he explains. “That’s
what the managers wanted, and I never had any free time.” He
can’t help it – he’s just always composing music, regardless of
genre. “But I wanted to put out the one that was nearest and
dearest to my heart, and that was Black Labyrinth,”' he says.
“This record is some dope shit, and I can only compare it to vin-
tage Peter Gabriel. There’s nothing else in the Korn catalog that
sounds even remotely like it. This is a completely different
thing than Korn, and something I’m really, really proud of.”
Tom Lanham talked to the Nu-Metal pioneer.

Solo story.
I's been nearly three decades since Michael McDermott's
debut album 620 W. Surf came out on Giant Records. It was 1990,
and McDermott was riding the crest of a wave of acclaimed
Chicago artists beginning to roll out across the country and
globe, thanks to a robust record industry and its growing army of
talent scouts. The modicum of attention he garnered then came
mostly for the catchy single "A Wall I Must Climb." But after his
second LP Gethsemane failed to meet sales expectations, his
"team's" dreams of stardom fizzled. What wasn't diminished was
the continued devotion of his core following, and McDermott's
need to find solace through both song and stage. Penelope Biver
talked to the longtime Chicago troubadour.
