COVER STORY:
FLOGGING MOLLY
Flogging Molly spends their entire new album
Life is Good, doing exactly what they're best at –
turning sadness into celebration, death into life
affirmation, darkness and despair into light and
hope, and political turmoil into some sort of edify-
ing, optimistic narrative. It’s Dave King and com-
pany’s most enjoyable work in years, and hearkens
back to the swaggering, Guinness-fueled brilliance
of their definitive 2002 sophomore set, Drunken
Lullabies. The presence of King’s late mother hangs
wraithlike over the album for good reason, the
frontman admits. "She supported me so much over
the years." Tom Lanham got the backstory.

HELLO MY NAME IS...JEAN-MICHEL JARRE
06
The last thing that 68-year-old French synth-rock trailblazer
Jean-Michel Jarre was expecting last year was a Best
Dance/Electronic Album Grammy nomination for Electronica 1:
The Time Machine comeback, the first in his two-disc series of col-
laborations with diverse artists like M83, Vince Clarke, Tangerine
Dream, Little Boots, Pete Townshend, and even John Carpenter.
The composer had been too busy putting together his first-ever
American tour, celebrating the 40th anniversary of his home-
recorded, multi-platinum debut from 1976, Oxygene, and record-
ing a new third followup album. Tom Lanham talked to the leg-
end.

When New Order keyboardist Gillian Gilbert stopped tour-
ing with the band in 1998, then quit altogether during the record-
ing of its 2001 album Get Ready, she did it graciously, almost
secretly, without any official departure announcement in the
press. “And I wanted it that way.” she admits. "But don’t get me
wrong – I was dying to say a few things." Tom Lanham talked

JOKER
42
Do you remember Joker? The Chicago-based glam metal band
of the late ’80s/early ’90s is making a comeback.
Joker had a dedicated local following when hairbands roamed
the earth, and they cut their teeth at the famed Thirsty Whale in
River Grove. However, when it came time to release their third
album, Cool Deal, the band’s record company shelved the master
tapes and the album was only - yes - released in Japan. Kelley
Simms talked to the band as they prepared for their reunion show
on May 6th.
