France is carrying this…this illness of soci-
ety, just like it happened with Brexit in the
UK, or with Donald Trump in the US. It’s
the fact that America is not just New York
and Los Angeles – it’s also the middle of
the country, and in the country today, in
France, 90% are for (far-right presidential
candidate) Marine Le Pen. I have some
family living in the UK, and they never
thought that the Brexit would happen, he
never saw it coming. But the following
morning, they had to admit, just like
America did the day after the election.
And the French presidential candidates
are so awful, or caught up in scandal, that
Le Pen has a better and better chance of
getting elected. And this is very serious.
But democracies need enemies, and ever

because the political system we’ve been
living through over the past 30, 40 years is
not working anymore. So we have to
understand that we are now in the 21st
century, and a lot of things have changed.
So in a sense, it’s kind of a revolution, not
so much an evolution. People are rejecting
the old ways. And while the French
Revolution and the American Revolution
were positive things, and in the light, this
time it seems like the revolution is coming
from the dark side. And there’s a certain
aspect to this that nobody understands –

since the end of the Cold War, the West
didn’t have any more enemies. But the
democracies had a cancer in themselves by
generating their own dark areas, and here
we are 30 years later, and we see it grow-
ing. And what’s going on in your country
is extraordinary – it’s like a reality TV
series, and you have no idea what’s going
to happen in the next episode.
