rial in the bubble. Which wasn't hard because none of us are particularly interested in what's happening at the moment. So the goal was really to do music that was true to our vision to what Carcass is. IE: I really enjoyed how the band was always progressing and getting more musical with each release. Can you actually pinpoint the time when this musical awareness really took place? BS: I think you can find these elements going back as early as the second album, Symphonies of Sickness (1989), but it's really the third album, Necrotism (1991), when we started to get ambitious. We were trying all kinds of different things. Very weird, IE: There are two new members in the band. How did you find them, and how long before they understood what Carcass is all about? BS: Well, Dan Wilding we found ini- May 6 Lilly Allen - Sheezus Black Stone Cherry - Magic Mountain Eno / Hyde - Someday World Liam Finn - The Nihilist The Horrors - Luminous Lykke Li - I Never Learn Maxïmo Park - Too Much Information Natalie Merchant - Natalie Merchant Santana - Corazón May 13 05•2014 technical stuff, technical compared to our abilities at that time. There is some stuff that is actually quite sweet and melodic. So tackling those things at that age, it wasn't easy for us, but we stretched our abilities to absolute limits. So when we were ready to do Heartwork (1993), we had the experience and something to draw out of, and we were just better equipped to do what we did. tially playing for one of our support bands on our first US tour when we reunited. He was playing drums in a band called Aborted from Belgium. I loved his drumming; I was very impressed and then I found out that he was actually British. He was recommended to us if we ever needed a drummer down the line, and then nature took its course, and he's with us now. There was no other contender in my mind, I mean there were great drummers that were being pushed at us, and they're all monster players, but Dan is just the right guy for Carcass. Ben Ash came into the picture further down the line. We'd already completed the album, but it was a similar scenario in one way. Again there were plenty of names being forwarded to us as possible guitarists, but ultimately, he was the only person we were taking IE: When the decision was made to write a new album, what was your guiding light? Was it to maintain that Carcass purity? Stay relevant, or was it the combination of both? BS: Definitely not to be relevant. That would just scramble my brain if I attempted to be relevant in today's metal world.
