Following up a groundbreaking album ( Power , Corruption , & Lies ) and single (" Blue Monday ") that broke the door down , meshing punk , goth , pop , rock , and dance - colliding on the dance floor , New Order were always going to have trouble following up their benchmark musical moment . Signing to Quincy Jones ’ s Qwest Records in America was a smart business decision , but hardcore American fans yelled “ sell-out .” They stumbled into the summer of 1984 with an ordinary sounding single ( for New Order ),

“ Thieves Live Us ,” an omen for their upcoming album . Overall it was a band sounding less dangerous than they had . New Order ' s 1985 album was more radiofriendly ( but not necessarily longtime fanfriendly ) than its predecessor , powered by the album rock favorite " Love Vigilantes ," a roots and country rock theme ( mixed with electronics ) not previously explored by the band . Once again , Peter Hook ' s bass separated the band from their ' 80s " techno " peers with a sinister bass line . " A Perfect Kiss " was a revelatory disco-influenced single for the band with some skillful EMU Emulator programming . With only eight tracks , Low-Life would be considered an EP for many bands ; comparing it to the far rockier Brotherhood and triumphant Technique from later in the decade , Low-Life lacks the strong album tracks the band churned out in the coming years . Despite their well-received singles , the album track " Face Up " sounds like an EMU programming exercise with a screechy vocal from Sumner , a low point for the band . " This Time of Night " is another throwaway blueprinted from the " Thieves Like Us " sessions . " Elegia " and " Sunrise " are moviesoundtrack instrumentals that enticed Jonathan Demme and John Hughes in the mid-80s but sound dated forty years later . Bonus tracks here don ' t enhance Low-Life , which is still one of the weaker albums in the band ' s catalog despite its strong singles .
