It would have been more credible as an Oakley solo album or billed as a side project featuring Jam and Lewis . The band regrouped in 1990 for Romantic ?, its final album on Virgin . The group struggled to gain traction in the explosive beginnings of grunge as a mainstream force , although Romantic ? was audibly more on the band ' s own terms than Crash had been . The band reunited with Dare producer Martin Rushent , in addition to four other producers including Moloko ' s Mark Brydon . The album ' s brightest spot is " Heart Like a Wheel ," which saw the return of Callis to collaborate as a songwriter and musician . It was a Top 40 single in the UK and US . " Men are Dreamers " is a middle-ofthe-road ballad that finds Oakley at low ebb . The percolating " Mr . Moon and Mister Sun " is livelier and recaptures the vocal style once so successful on " Fascination !" " Rebound " is moody and evocative . " Let ' s Get Together Again " has the makings of a pop hit but wasn ' t released as a single . The band instead went with underinflated dance track " Soundtrack to a Generation ." It

The selfreferential album track " The Stars are Going Out " has an irresistible vibe even as the song describes the band ' s waning fortunes . " We used to be so hot , a million kilowatts or more ," sings Oakley . It ' s the epitaph for the meteoric arc represented by this box set . Romantic ? appears on clear vinyl . Taken as a whole , the box portrays the band ' s undeniable initial spark , documents several indelible singles from the heyday of New Wave , and shows how difficult it is to keep lightning trapped in a bottle .
