doing.” I don’t think we ever thought that this was going to be a long career, although Keren and I have been doing this for over 30 years now. But we had a similar meeting with Malcolm McLaren, where he was telling us, “You need to do this, and you need to do that.” But trying to tell three girls how to be and what to do? That was just not on our agenda. So that didn’t work out at all. IE: Can you imagine any of today’s pre- fab girl groups going drinking with Robert Smith, though? Or doing anything off Simon Cowell's script? SD: Well, we were always a group of girls, not a girl group. And we probably had more in common with groups like Duran Duran and The Cure. And Keren and I later became friends with The Prodigy. We were just people, and you certainly March 2 Andrew W.K. And our style was always our style – innate and never contrived – so it was always very easy for us. couldn’t have defined us as ‘That girl group.’ We weren’t manufactured, and we always had opinions and – to use that awful term – Girl Power. I didn’t grow up thinking I couldn’t do something because I was female – that was never on the agenda for me. So we’ve always been strong in our opinions and in where we wanted to go in life, I think. IE: Are you three going to record again now? SD: That’s never been the plan – it was just “Okay – let’s do a one-off tour of Britain and see what happens.” And it was a great thing. Then someone said, “Would you want to come and do some shows in America?” And we just thought, “Yeah – great!” Because there were so many fans that really wanted to see us out there that loads of Americans came over to the UK, and they were popping [up] in places like Cardiff and York.
