continued from page 33 Continued from page 38 on. That was when we dug out the path for the rest of our life. This has become our job, our life 100 percent. I'm really glad we were so eager and interested in making music. I'm really proud of what we did back then. IE: How did you approach the material on In Times? There's a great blend of many elements and styles. GK: That's the beauty of Enslaved. When we start rehearsing or writing and arranging new material, we have no idea how it will end up. We just go with the flow and accept each individual song. We have to respect and treat it like it was its own organism, to just try and make it evolve on its own. The only conscious move we did this time was not to think of the length or the construction of the songs. It's coincidental that it ended up sounding like our old stuff or mid-period stuff. We listen to a great variety of music, all of us. The songs you make is obviously colored by what you have been listening to and I guess we've been listening to a lot of different stuff this time. IE: Since your debut album, you and Ivar have always handled production duties, as you have again for this album. Do you like wearing the producers hat in addition to playing on the album? GK: As I said earlier, Enslaved is our lives, 100 percent. We can have a co-producer, which we haven't done for the last couple of albums, but we like to be almost in full control ourselves. We don't want an external producer to be in control of things. We might be a little bit selfish. We trust ourselves, maybe too much. That's one of the only formulas we'll stick to; do it ourselves, and have some co-producing partners who give healthy advice and discussions. IE: How many new songs will be included in the set list on your upcoming In Times tour? GK: We are planning on playing three or four new songs in the set. We don't know the set length so we haven't decided which ones yet. We will start rehearsals pretty soon. If it's six songs (in the set list), then we will play at least half of them, so I hope people are going to be happy about those new songs. Appearing at Thalia Hall, Chicago 3/17.
