New Location ! never enjoyed the same crossover success as Thom Yorke and company . Where Radiohead would occasionally pepper their paranoid , dystopian concept albums with brief , radio-friendly flirtations with poprock , Spiritualized created droning mood pieces where melody took a back seat to twisting soundscapes and orchestral flourishes . Jason Pierce ( aka J Spaceman ) has been working in this medium since the mid- ' 80s when his first band Spacemen 3 avoided the sounds du jour instead going for trance-inducing repetitious space rock blasting out of Leslie speakers . Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To was not only one of their album titles but also seemed like a mission statement . That band would disintegrate right when they were on the verge of a breakthrough and Pierce struck out on his own with the band Spiritualized . Their 1997 high water mark Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating Space hit during a year when nearly every English rock band was releasing five-star classics . If it was released in a different era it would have been universally lauded but it being 1997 it meant it had to compete with OK Computer , When I Was Born For the 7th Time , Urban Hymns , Dig Your Own Hole , Blur , In It For The Money , Tellin ’ Stories and Vanishing Point meaning that a US crossover wasn ’ t in the cards . Since then , Spiritualized would pop up once every seven or so years with an epic space rock full length . In 2018 they returned with the Kurt Vonnegut-titled … And Nothing Hurt and this 2022 follow up Everything Was Beautiful . A seamless suite of seven parts , this album explodes out of the speakers with an intensity that ’ s been missing in their music for the past decade . Pierce plays 16 different instruments and employs over 30 musicians with some songs containing 200 individual recording tracks . Bursting at the seams with horns and strings and dozens of other details floating around the mix , Everything Was Beautiful ’ s centerpiece “ The Mainline Song ” details the endless opportunity of a spontaneous late-night drive into the city . If you were to pull away all the layers most of these songs are simple and based on one or two-chord progressions but the way Spiritualized squeezes so much widescreen emotion out of those few chords is quite impressive . The ornate , epic soundscapes on Everything Was Beautiful are truly a thing to behold and certainly worth your attention .

BONHAM-BULLICK Bonham-Bullick
( Quarto Valley )
Who knew that late iconic Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham had a sister who could belt out powerful blues tunes ? Deborah Bonham is one half of UK blues / rock band Bonham-Bullick , also featuring husband / guitarist / songwriter Peter Bullick . The duo just released its new 13- track self-titled covers album featuring obscure blues , rock , and soul tunes from musical greats such as Albert King , Isaac Hayes , Ann Peebles , and more . Bonham has carved out a respectable career over several decades by releasing three previous critically acclaimed albums and performing and / or touring with artists including Robert Plant , Foreigner , Paul Rodgers , and more . Album opener “ See You Again ” is a riveting rendition of Bernard Fowler ’ s original opus , decorated with lush backing vocals and Deb ’ s powerhouse pipes , which possess a sassy Joni Mitchell / Janis Joplin / Stevie Nicks inflection . The sharp guitar work of Bullick masterly guides the songs along , as he adds his own tasty flair to the solos . “ Bleeding Muddy Water ” by the late Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees fits in the band ’ s wheelhouse so well , while the doomy vibe of “ Trouble Blues ,” a song made famous by Sam Cooke , is flawless . Album closer “ The Changeling ” by late Australian singer Chris Wilson is decorated with lyrics that are intense , deep , and emotional , proving to be a very powerful way to end the record . Bonham-Bullick is a special record rooted in the blues that shows off the band ’ s skillful musicianship , which is made up of very accomplished musicians . The band ’ s cover versions aren ’ t just a clone of the original songs , and the way they interpret them and bring their own flavor to them is phenomenal . Not only do the songs sound fantastic , but the production , mixing , and mastering ( handled by Deborah ) are equally impressive .
The ultimate takeaway from this stirring album is the desire instilled in the listener to seek out the original songs and discover these particular artists that may not be that familiar to them and explore their back catalog .

CHAINS OVER RAZORS Chains Over Razors
( Deko )
Basing its name off a National Geographic show on taboos about people who hang from chains and walk on razors , Chicago ’ s Chains Over Razors was formed in 2014 by vocalist Franco " V " Roc and Serbian twin brothers , guitarist Mikey Vujasin and drummer Andy Vujasin . The talented trio generated a decent buzz within the national music scene with its smashing debut album Crown the Villain . On its self-titled sophomore album , the band unleashes an arsenal of catchy choruses , melodic hooks , massive grooves , soaring vocal harmonies , and tunes that rock your face off . Influenced by a diverse and wide variety of styles in the general heavy rock / metal genre , pinpointing exact influences would be futile — which is a pleasant surprise these days . The 12-track album was produced by legendary drummer Carmine Appice ( Ozzy , Rod Stewart , Vanilla Fudge , etc .) and mastered by Alan Douches ( Mastodon , The Dillinger Escape Plan ), giving it a crisp and modern flavor . Chains Over Razors ’ unique calling card is that it doesn ’ t have a traditional bass guitarist , allowing Mikey ’ s custom 7-string guitar with odd tuning and an octave pedal
