And then the day of the show, it’ s usually a 12 to 14-hour day to load the band gear in, to have the sound checks, focus the lights, open the doors, get the people in [ side ]. Then after a three-hour show, all the gear goes out, and it’ s another two to three hours at the end of the show to get all the gear out of the building.”
All of the pre-paid costs associated with the set-up and production come out of the promoter’ s pocket, and they don’ t get any of the ticket revenue until the show has actually concluded.“ We’ re out all that cash, and we’ re hoping to get that money back and make a profit,” Gelman said.“ It makes it difficult when you’ re doing multiple shows across the country. There’ s this constant cash flow of money going out in advance, and you have to wait till the show happens to get paid back by the box office." Zelisko continues to explain, " Every time we put on a show we have what we call a " nut " of what we have to make. It starts with the band. Figure any medium-sized hall, like the Copernicus for example; I’ m thinking
[ about ] whatever the gross is going to cost. I figure I have to do anywhere between $ 35,000- $ 50,000 on all of the other costs to break even.”
It’ s about paying the bills. And a promoter’ s job is to pay those bills while also putting on an affordable and quality show.“ We’ re not limited to the smaller venues either,” Gelman said.“ But when the bigger companies buy an entire tour, we’ re not getting a cut. We’ re building our niche market, and there’ s enough of the pie to go around for the big guys and us little guys.”
Zelisko and Gelman have each been successful with their own companies for the past several years. However, if the Alan Parsons show goes as well as they hope, there could be more joint ventures to co-promote. Gelman remains optimistic about future endeavors.“ My focus has been the Chicago market with the smaller concerts, but what I’ d like to do with Danny is expand outside the Chicago market. There are a lot of places I’ d like to expand the business, to go with our newfound " old " friendship / new partnership.” Tickets for Alan Parsons at the Copernicus Center on June 5 are $ 33 to $ 83, with a special VIP meet and greet for $ 183.
