Certainty.” How did you decide on this track? Dave Matrise: It brings me back to the beginning of my childhood days. That’ s kind of how the album feels to me. It’ s kind of modern, but it’ s kind of more mid-80s / late-80s thrash-death feel. Having Schmier on there with the vocals, I kind of set the pace for writing the whole album. And then wanting to do the Kreator song on top of that also set the pace for the album, too. I think it fits right in there well with the rest of the songs, and I think people are going to be blown away when they hear that song. I can’ t wait for the reaction we ' ll hear for it.
Mosh: Jungle Rot’ s long out-of-print album What Horrors Await was just remastered, remixed and reissued on your current label, Victory Records. Why was it not available in the US until now? Dave Matrise: Napalm did a limited run based on their agreement. I think they only pressed 2,500. And if you know Napalm Records- they’ re a really good label over in Europe- I give them credit. They’ re huge over there, but in the U. S, there’ s really nothing here and it never really got distributed through the US. And it’ s kind of a good thing because I’ m glad Victory picked it up and it has a proper home. It’ s definitely getting a proper release now.
Mosh: What did Victory Records have to go through to get this album? Dave Matrise: That wasn’ t easy at all, man. This was a two-year negotiation deal, and I guess [ Napalm ] finally got an offer for them to sell the rights to it and Victory picked it up. [ Napalm ] basically was doing nothing
with the album. They ' d shelved it, so they had to do something with it. You’ re either going to have to press it and release it, [ or sell it ] and that’ s what they did. They just [ couldn ' t let it ] sit there because they’ d lose money on it.
Mosh: You’ ll be playing at Reggie’ s twice this month and again in July. What do you like most about playing Chicago? Dave Matrise: We love Chicago. That’ s always been our home turf, that’ s where we get most of our support from. It’ s one of the better markets for this kind of music. We never have a bad show there. We love Reggie’ s. The hospitality that they give us, the crew, it’ s first class. It just feels like home. When you’ re out there( on the road), there’ s nothing that feels better than being home, and we ' ve always felt welcome when we played there. And that’ s what makes it fun.
Mosh: You ' re touring a lot this summer, but are there any other upcoming plans? Dave Matrise: Just... stay on the road! After 25-plus years of playing, we still enjoy touring, and I just hope the people enjoy the new album. By the support of the people, it’ ll keep us going, and I can’ t thank them enough. I never thought I’ d be here this long and doing this, still. Dreams do come true. Be careful what you wish for. This is the most I’ ve been excited, ever, out of all the albums. I know we have some good material. They’ re all good albums, but for some reason, I’ m just really happy with this one the way it turned out. And everybody did a great job.
