or a piano in an academy, like where I went to school. So it is an instrument that is so vast and unique, and it belongs to all human beings.
IE: What will you do when your daughter insists you take her to Coachella, just to see Sabrina Carpenter? ON: Well, she’ s only five, so she won’ t be saying
that any time soon. But I have another ten-yearold, so I love listening to all the pop music and anything they are excited about— I’ m very open and serious about that, and I won’ t speak negatively about any type of music. I think energy is energy, whether it’ s a pop artist like Sabrina Carpenter or an Indian raga vocalist. When artists happen to come across that energy that everyone loves, that’ s the same energy— that’ s what I think.
IE: It’ s very 4AD-ish. Don’ t you think? It’ s the landmark label of great surreal sonic conceptualists like Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil, and the Cocteau Twins— many of them duos, like you. ON: Oh, okay! Well, I’ m glad you think so! But yeah— this has been.. I mean, from the beginning, when we were just recording in his home studio, when the songs emerged, I was like,“ Wow! I feel like I’ m in a massive daze!” Which is something that I don’ t ever think about in my solo work— I don’ t aim to be up in a coliseum. But it just felt so big, the sound itself, and that it could be even bigger. And I was like,“ Oh, yeah! Let’ s just explore
this and see where it takes us!” So we kind of wanted to just get the music out, as opposed to spending years, maybe, trying to find labels and trying to figure all that out. We thought,“ Let’ s just release it and see what it does, see what kind of an impact it makes.”
IE: And the strangest part is that much of the
falsetto singing is him, while you’ re singularly responsible for the deep, Diamanda Galas growling. ON: Yes! You want to go out with a master like that. She is amazing.
IE: Do you teach your techniques? ON: I teach clients when I want, I teach with certain people when I want, and I also teach workshops, and I also do retreats. I’ ll take people on a five-day journey to deepen their relationship with their voices, where I teach a lot of different ways of anxiety control, what I call“ See the Voice,” where they can connect with their sound through various ways of singing. I teach out of my home studio, I teach online, and then I rent out spaces where I invite people to workshop. I was just at Esalen in Big Sur.
IE: I’ m surprised you haven’ t anchored your own TED Talk yet. ON: I know! I’ m waiting! That’ s the dream- I have a LOT to say!
