Counting Crows's songs have appeared
in countless movies and television shows,
including Shrek 2. Although Duritz is
somewhat flattered by movie soundtrack
offers, he's pretty selective in which movie
gets to use his songs, whether it's an existing song or one he specifically writes for
the movie.
"I'm really strict about that. I used to
have a rule that they can't put anything in
any movie until
they've show us the
whole movie first.
And we've kept that
pretty strictly all the
way up to Two Weeks
Notice because they
needed it ahead of
time. Even with
Shrek, they showed
me almost all of it so
I could figure out circa 1994
what to write. A lot of our songs are in
independent films. There were people that
came to us because we liked their movies.
Nick Cassavetes's first movie, Unhook the
Stars, had "Raining In Baltimore" on it. We
wrote a song for Rounders because those
guys came to us. Rounders was a really successful movie but it was just an indie
movie at the time but it just kind of blew
up. We gave a song for Cruel Intentions
because those guys came and showed it to
me and I thought it was pretty cool.
Probably the first movie that I ever gave a
song to was Clueless. They showed me the
movie and I thought it was hysterical. It
was another one of those movies that was
pretty much an underground movie that
blew up. I just want it to be a good movie.
That's why I like Shrek. The kids movies,
those are hard to come by. When you make
a kids movie, that stuff lasts forever.
Movies like Shrek, generations after generations will see those movies. That stuff's
timeless."
On the band's upcoming tour, they will
select from a bevy of new songs to preview
before the album's fall release.
"We'll probably play all them (at one
point). We don't really plan that stuff out
ahead of time like that because the setlist
changes
every
night. Usually after
soundcheck
and
around dinner time,
I'll send a text out to
the band, the crew
and the opening
band if they're
friends of ours, asking if there's anything they want to
play or hear that
night. Everyone texts me stuff back. I don't
necessarily follow that, but it reminds me
of songs that we haven't played in awhile.
There's no better reason to play a song than
the fact that someone actually wants to
play it that night. That's a pretty good reason for playing it. So when someone
requests something, I'm more likely to do
that on that night, especially if it's from a
band member. We don't have to play anything we don't want to play, so we don't.
But we're really into what we're doing and
you'll get a really passionate show."
