between Beethoven and Coffinworm
would be the Indianapolis-based metal
band's namesake invertebrate, gnawing on
the dusty remains of the great classical-era
(de)composer. But deeper, there are structural similarities between, say, the 5th and
IV.I.VIII. The clearest is how the album
resolves itself, climaxing at the same speed
with which it led off, and before it dove
headlong into the blackened/sludge
tarpits. More fundamentally, Coffinworm
love the idea of motifs, twisting and contorting subatomic melodic (or, in this case,
a-melodic) elements until their uses are
exhausted. That the architecture is disguised as chaos is a bonus. That it can be
done this brutally and without gassy,
symph-metal pomp is another.
