a fundamental theme of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot as “ the way people communicated or ultimately failed to communicate .” Tweedy also explored his love and disappointment with America . Wilco communicated their art in their own way , particularly beginning with this album . Fans and critics alike continue to admire them for it . The album was Jay Bennett ’ s swan song with Wilco , as seen in the documentary I Am Trying to Break Your Heart : A Film About Wilco . The film began as a “ making-of ” documentary and wound up known as a bird ’ s-eye view of the unraveling of a once-close partnership between the talented Bennett and Tweedy . The pair is credited with writing all but two of the album ’ s songs together . After opening like Cure ’ s “ In Between Days ,” Bennett ’ s signature twanging guitar lines adorn the lovely and jangling “ Pot Kettle Black .” Chicago fixture and improvisational jazz cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm get his licks into the mix , too .
The achievement and staying power of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is marked with this expanded anniversary edition . The Expanded Edition CD package augments the original 11-song set with a second disc of 18 previously unreleased tracks bundled under the name The Unified Theory of Everything . First is a full run through Yankee Hotel Foxtrot with different versions of every song , exposing alternate choices in production and experimentation that help to reveal the evolution that produced the beloved final album . The alternate “ Ashes of American Flags ” quotes Igor Stravinsky ’ s “ Symphony of Psalms .” Some songs share fundamental similarity with different sonic or rhythmic choices . Others like “ I ’ m The Man Who Loves You ” change key in order to find the sweet spot for Tweedy ’ s voice . The alternate-universe Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is followed by a clutch of seven worthy B- sides . Versions of the Rockpile-styled rockabilly track “ Shakin ’ Sugar ” and “ Venus Stopped the Train ” appeared on the 2002 album The Palace at 4AM by Bennett and Edward Burch . Wilco ’ s version of “ Shakin ’ Sugar ” sounds a little more Nick Lowe than Bennett / Burch ’ s version , which veers toward Dave Edmunds ’ side of the Rockpile comparison . Wilco ’ s take on “ Venus Stopped the Train ” relies upon Tweedy ’ s reverbed vocal and Bennett ’ s parlor piano , sounding more forlorn and isolated than Bennett / Burch ’ s Spacehog-meets-ELO delivery . “ Remember to Remember ( Hummingbird )” is an early version of the song that became “ Hummingbird ” on 2004 ’ s A Ghost is Born . With a propulsive tom-tom beat and Stirratt ’ s anchoring acoustic bass track , this demo version sounds more like a collaboration with Mick Fleetwood , having not yet adopted the bouncy , McCartneyesque piano that signifies the album track . Fan-favorite deep cut “ The Good Part ” leaps from an island rhythm in its verse toward a fuzzed-out garage rock chorus .
A Super Deluxe Edition offers 82 previously unreleased tracks for even deeper immersion . The set includes a full live show , a hardback book detailing the history of the album , a September 2001 Sound Opinions broadcast from Chicago ’ s WXRT with interview and performance segments , and a “ Deep End ” disc of demos , drafts , and instrumentals . NAS King ’ s Disease III
( Mass Appeal )
“ It ’ s comedy , it ’ s hilarious , look yourself in the mirror , tell me times ain ’ t the scariest ” is how Nasir Jones opens his third installment of the King ’ s Disease series . The “ Return Of The Jedi ” of albums created by veteran rapper Nas with Millennial producer Hit-Boy , Kings Disease III hasnorightto be as good as it is . This isn ’ t stuff left on the cutting room floor ; instead , KDIII finds Nas in fine form . This is grown-folk rap music by a man who no longer has time to suffer fools . Back in 1994 , when Nas released his debut album Illmatic , it felt like a breath of fresh air . A lyrical wunderkind , Nasir Jones flexed a vocabulary and intelligence that felt light years ahead of his peers . With one foot
