ly special and important . But it definitely took some patience and some practice to figure out how to take your turn with speaking or singing an idea . And you had to deal with the time delay , and then we had to send everything back to the producer , who was working off his laptop in his bedroom on his dresser because he couldn ’ t go back to his studio at the time . And then he ’ d send us all these links to a website where you could just listen , in real-time , to what he was doing . So I would say for that solo record ? Sixty to Seventy percent of it is iPhone-recorded — where I ’ d literally pull out an acoustic guitar , put up my iPhone , play the chords or the guitar-lead line , text it to my good friend who produced that , and the new Fitz and the Tantrums record , Ryan Daly , and he would input whatever I sent him . And sometimes he ’ d have me on Mute , and he ’ d be watching and go , “ What are you doing ? You ’ re flailing around there !” But I was literally playing percussion on my glass of water , and then on the table , then on a box behind me , playing all these different rhythmical things . And then I would text them to him , and those became almost all of the percussion tracks on that record . So yeah , it was a learning curve , and I hope I never have to write another record via Zoom again .
But it kept us sane and let us try to put some positivity out into the pandemic world at that time , and it was great . And I cannot listen to that album now without getting highly emotional because everything about it was so specific to the craziest period of all of our lives .
IE : Okay , talk to me like I ’ m five now . The Macy ’ s
Thanksgiving Day Parade . How do you get invited onto a float ? Twice ? And who decides to pair you up with , say , King ’ s Hawaiian Bread ? MFF : For the first one , we were having huge success with “ Handclap ” at that moment , and it had been out for six months or a year as a single , so they invited us , and they said , “ You ’ re gonna be on the Hawaiian Bread float .” And we were like , “ Okay . But what does that mean ?” And it meant that Noelle and I sat on top of a thirty-foot-high fake volcano as we were traveling down Fifth Avenue , freezing our asses off . And that was the craziest thing — we were at this unusual height of , like , the second or third storey , looking into all these very fancy apartments . And we saw families where they looked very … very proper , you know ? Like , the whole family in suits and ties and jackets on Thanksgiving morning , where they were all in a row with plaid bow ties .
