COVER STORY: AFI
Davey Havok would like to take a vacation. He really would. But at this point – as the AFI bandleader and latter-day Renaissance man grapples with one of the busiest schedules in show business – he very well might have forgotten how. Rest and recreation are for other rockers – not him.
Havok, 41, is preparing to head out on tour with his group( which includes longtime members Jade Puget on guitar, drummer Adam Carson, and bassist Hunter Burgan), backing their new tenth effort, AFI( The Blood Album), which Puget also produced. It taps into Mission-and-Sisters-of- Mercy-vintage basslines and even heavier philosophical musings. IE ' s Tom Lanham finds out that AFI itself is never easy to pigeonhole.

HELLO MY NAME IS... CHRISSIE
Tom Lanham asked Pretenders bandleader Chrissie Hynde what does punk signify in 2017? It could summarize the scrappy old-school spirit coursing through Alone, the latest garage-greasy riff-fest from Hynde’ s group, or it could still refer to its original nebulous concept.“ The whole idea of punk was, you just had to be yourself." Hynde told IE. Read our Q & A.
BASH & POP
Tommy Stinson( ex-The Replacements) spent over 15 years of his life in Guns N ' Roses. He ' s credited with playing bass on most of Chinese Democracy, even co-writing " Street Of Dreams " with Rose and Dizzy Reed. The 2014 live release Appetite For Democracy, culled from the pre-reunion band ' s 2012 Las Vegas residency, features an amalgam of Appetite For Destruction and Chinese Democracy favorites, including a Stinson solo cut. Mike Meyer talked to Tommy about his Bash & Pop comeback.
ALTER BRIDGE
After a decade of playing in Creed, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips formed Alter Bridge in 2004 with ex-The Mayfield Four singer Myles Kennedy. The band has gone onto create five albums, with its latest being The Last Hero. Having just wrapped up a six-week run in Europe, Alter Bridge is set for its first North American headline tour starting in January. The band is stoked for the new tour and is especially excited about playing some of its brand new material. Kelley Simms talked to Miles about the band as they prepare for their show in Chicago.
TEDESCHI TRUCKS BAND
Florida ' s legendary Tedeschi Trucks Band, led by married blues guitar greats Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, return to the Chicago Theater for a 3-night run in January. IE ' s Ed Spinelli talked to Derek as he readied his all-star band for their 3 day stay on State Street.
