series theme and Henry Mancini ’ s intro music for the Inspector Clouseau cartoons . As it appeared on Dismantle , the self-deprecating and grateful ode “ All Because of You ” was variously characterized as a song of faith , an ode to a guiding partner in marriage , and a love song to the Who . With a more primal urgency to the prototype versus matching The Edge ’ s strident power chords , “ All Because of You 2 ” is more clearly a song of praise from Bono to his higher power . It thereby closes Re-Assemble on a similar thematic note struck by “ Yahweh ” on Dismantle . Although “ 2 ” has more energy , the Dismantle version has the better melody .
The inclusion of “ All Because of You 2 ” is the deep-cut equivalent of including “ Vertigo ” prototype “ Native Son ,” an unnecessary move that the band opted against . There are other non-album tracks from the Dismantle sessions that were not called into service , including “ Vertigo ” B-side “ Neon Lights .” The chilled-out and deconstructed cover of Kraftwerk ’ s original song was rooted in echoing piano and decorated with glistening bell tones . Another couple of tracks like this in place of “ Batman ” and “ All Because of
You 2 ” could have strengthened the position of Re-Assemble as a true shadow album to Dismantle . Instead , Re-Assemble is a bit of a hodgepodge .
As such , Re-Assemble won ’ t convert many non-believers . Nonetheless , this is a worthwhile companion project that offers context in a similar way that Zooropa gave insight into the collective mindset that produced Achtung Baby . It bears repeating that much of Re- Assemble is approached with a bristling energy that often makes this collection of spare parts more immediately catchy and memo-
