Mosh: The Wild Hunt is a great album but it polarized a lot of Watain fans. Or maybe it was just misinterpreted by a lot of them? Why does this album divide fans so much and do you even care? Erik: It was an album where we chose, on one or two songs, to explore and experiment further with our sound and vision, and to be very personal and open. Some people find such an approach enriching and interesting. Some get offended and confused, like children when you take away their toys. I am not particularly interested in anyone’ s negative opinions on our work; I am more interested in those that bring something of power and strength back to the band. So all this whining that I often get asked about [ regarding ] * The Wild Hunt passed me by quite unnoticed, to be honest. To me, the album meant and still means a lot, it has become an extremely important part of our history as a band.

Mosh: Watain’ s popularity has crossed over to mainstream black metal appeal in the past few years. However, you’ re still doing things your own way and on your own terms. That must be gratifying to you and the band? Erik: I think I’ ve been answering questions like this since the release of Sworn to the Dark in 2007 and while I can understand why this is interesting to people I also think the answer is quite simple. We have been releasing our albums on bigger labels, Season of Mist and Century Media, and in doing so, you will automatically reach a wider audience. Add to that the increasing interest in black metal from mainstream culture in the past ten years, and it’ s clear to see why a hungry and explosive force like Watain will also become known outside the black metal scene. Mosh: Regarding your views on Satanism, you mentioned the last time we spoke that you prefer to proclaim your beliefs through your lyrics and music instead of having to explain them in every interview. Erik: All lyrics on the album are written by me and so they are all linked to the core of my being and the devil-god that resides there. Some of them deal with topics that are very closely linked to fundamental Satanic ideas; sacred toil and struggle, the forceful attainment of power, the predatory dismembering of opposition, communication with the dark divine, radical self-transformation and transcendence. Others are of a more allegorical visionary nature and are written states of mind akin to those of ecstasy or deep meditation.

Mosh: The band is known for its notoriously bloody live shows. You mentioned in previous interviews that you get the blood in somehow. I assume the pyrotechnics, blood, and the ritual-like vibe is an integral part of your performances? Erik: We try to make the entire concert setting into something that will directly represent the way our music sounds, and the way it appears to us in our heart and souls. This is why a Watain concert should always be smoke, fire, spikes, blood, chains, death, metal, leather, chaos and raw fucking ecstasy! No compromise! This is over 30 years after people shat their pants after seeing Venom. We have to make sure things keep progressing in the right way; straight into hell. Mosh: You haven’ t played in the States
