from the next installment of The Avengers,
due in May. Or, it could be because they’re
just trying to mix it up and spread the wealth
out in the first quarter when there is less com-
petition. No matter what the reason, we’ll
take it. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the
Black Panther as the first black hero in main-
stream comics in 1966 and fans have waited a
long time for the film (Wesley Snipes men-
tioned it back in 1992 but it never came to
fruition). Black Panther first appeared in
*Captain America: Civil War (2016) but this is
his first stand-alone film in the Marvel
Universe. Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station,
Creed) directs Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa
(Black Panther), prince of the African nation
of Wakanda, who must take over the throne
after his father’s murder. Upon his return
home, he finds his role challenged by a long-
time adversary, Killmonger (Michael B.
Jordan), and that could incite a global war.
Lupita Nyong’o is Nakia, T’Challa’s former
lover and a member of the Dora Milaje,
Wakanda’s all-female special forces, and *The
Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira is Okoye, head
of Intel for the Dora Milaje. The impressive
cast also includes Sterling K. Brown, Andy
Serkis, Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett,
Winston Duke, Letitia Wright, Martin
Freeman, and Daniel Kaluuya.
The Party
Directed by Sally Potter
Rated: R • February 16
This British dark comedy was written and
directed by Sally Potter (Orlando, The Tango
Lesson, Rage, Ginger & Rosa). Idealist Janet
The 15:17 To Paris
(Kristin Scott Thomas) is hosting an intimate
gathering of friends in her London home to
celebrate her political appointment, while her
husband, materialistic Bill (Timothy Spall),
seems preoccupied. Friends arrive, some
with their own dramatic news to share, but
an announcement by Bill provokes a series of
revelations that gradually unravel the sophis-
ticated soiree, and a night that began with
champagne may end with gunplay. Patricia
Clarkson (as April, a cynical realist who
steals the film), Cherry Jones (Martha, the
Women’s Studies professor), Emily Mortimer
(Jinny, the cook and Martha’s partner),
Cillian Murphy (Tom) and Bruno Ganz
(Gottfried the life coach and spiritual healer)
make up the rest of the quirky and superb
cast.
