As Pavement reunited for tours and festival appearances over the past few years , one couldn ’ t help but feel the cravings for new music . Pavement was always about capturing a moment and then quickly moving on , and even this latest reconstitution felt temporary .
While no new Pavement music was offered , fans of Stephen Malkmus rejoiced in July when details of a brand new band , The Hard Quartet ( a sly wink to the term “ Hardcore ”) emerged . Gag reflex-inducing terms like “ supergroup ” bely the fact that The Hard Quartet is the closest thing Malkmus has had to a living , breathing rock band since Pavement ’ s penultimate album Brighten The Corners . Stephen Malkmus is happy to lay back and help his bandmates paint a mood , similar to his work with Silver Jews , but when he takes the lead , it ’ s a happy homecoming .
