on your late sister Jaime?
BH: I’m a strong believer in that — just
because someone passes from this physi-
cal realm — it doesn’t mean they’re gone.
So all those things I was going through —
all the triumphs and defeats — I just feel
like my sister’s spirit was right there with
me the whole time, pushing me forward
and giving me strength when I thought I
IE: How did you recruit Terry Crews for
your “Stay High” video?
BH: That was all my idea. I knew it had to
be Terry Crews in the video, and I even
said to myself, “If Terry Crews does not
say yes, then I’m not going to do the clip at
all.” But I wrote him a letter, and he liked
the idea and the sentiment behind it and
he said, “Yeah! I’m in!” And he came out

didn’t have any. And also, she introduced
me to music from a very early age, and she
taught me to use my creativity. Because we
didn’t have a lot growing up, so we had to
use our imaginations. So I just felt like it
was the right time to dedicate the record to
her, just to say thank you, because I don’t
feel like I did any of this truly alone.
IE: Have you ever been contacted by her
spirit?
BH: Well, I don’t want to talk about that in
an interview. But I will say that I’m a very
spiritual person and that I totally believe
in that kind of thing. And I actually used
to live in a haunted house, where doors
slammed in front of me and behind me,
and curtains would move by themselves.
One night, I even got locked out of my
own house by some presence inside. And
there were disembodied voices there, too.
It was terrifying.
and did it.
IE: One final question about your road
trip — did you see any wacky roadside
Americana? Like the World’s Largest
Prairie Dog?
BH: Yeah, but I think the weird shit was
US. We were making our own food in our
2000 Jeep Cherokee, and we had this cool-
er full of strange food, and we ate hard-
boiled eggs every morning and wrote and
sang songs. Then we would stop in these
strange, desperate little towns that won’t
be there very long because all the young
people have left, and we’d go to bars and
talk to bartenders and try the food that
they proclaimed was the best in town. So I
think we were the strangest things that
popped up along the way, honestly.
