on your late sister Jaime? BH: I’m a strong believer in that — just because someone passes from this physi- cal realm — it doesn’t mean they’re gone. So all those things I was going through — all the triumphs and defeats — I just feel like my sister’s spirit was right there with me the whole time, pushing me forward and giving me strength when I thought I IE: How did you recruit Terry Crews for your “Stay High” video? BH: That was all my idea. I knew it had to be Terry Crews in the video, and I even said to myself, “If Terry Crews does not say yes, then I’m not going to do the clip at all.” But I wrote him a letter, and he liked the idea and the sentiment behind it and he said, “Yeah! I’m in!” And he came out 12•2019 didn’t have any. And also, she introduced me to music from a very early age, and she taught me to use my creativity. Because we didn’t have a lot growing up, so we had to use our imaginations. So I just felt like it was the right time to dedicate the record to her, just to say thank you, because I don’t feel like I did any of this truly alone. IE: Have you ever been contacted by her spirit? BH: Well, I don’t want to talk about that in an interview. But I will say that I’m a very spiritual person and that I totally believe in that kind of thing. And I actually used to live in a haunted house, where doors slammed in front of me and behind me, and curtains would move by themselves. One night, I even got locked out of my own house by some presence inside. And there were disembodied voices there, too. It was terrifying. and did it. IE: One final question about your road trip — did you see any wacky roadside Americana? Like the World’s Largest Prairie Dog? BH: Yeah, but I think the weird shit was US. We were making our own food in our 2000 Jeep Cherokee, and we had this cool- er full of strange food, and we ate hard- boiled eggs every morning and wrote and sang songs. Then we would stop in these strange, desperate little towns that won’t be there very long because all the young people have left, and we’d go to bars and talk to bartenders and try the food that they proclaimed was the best in town.
