The essentials, naturally, are the duo's five studio albums released between 1964 and 1970. The act arrived fully formed with 1964's Wednesday Morning, 3AM. Immortal song "The Sound of Silence" relied upon little more than Simon's acoustic guitar and the uncanny blend of Garfunkel's angelic tenor and Simon's earthbound harmony. "The Sound of Silence" was embellished with rock instrumentation without Simon and Garfunkel's knowledge and released as a single from 1966's sophomore album Sounds of Silence. The gravity of Wednesday Morning's starker version was undermined, but the touch-up became a smash hit. The approach provided other material with fresh power, too. The steelyeyed "I Am a Rock" follows the electric folk-rock sound of Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" from the prior year. Ensuing favorites like "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)," "Mrs. Robinson," "Homeward Bound" and "A Hazy Shade of Winter" are included on their respective albums and soundtrack for 1968's The Graduate. The pair's studio run ended in 1970 with the complex and layered Bridge Over Troubled Water. Even casual fans can still sing along to the title cut and other highlights including "Cecilia," "Baby Driver," and "The Boxer." A live cover of the Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love" was propelled by the crowd's clapping, with a fan's jubilant scream punctuating its final chorus. The song served as homage to a key influence and a note of farewell to the partnership. The box includes four live albums. More than 500,000 witnessed 1981's Concert in Central Park reunion, where Garfunkel elevated solo Simon material like "Slip Slidin' Away." Although, it could be argued that it's redundant, 1972's Greatest Hits collection sold over 14 million copies in the US and stands as the band's biggest commercial success. –7 – Jeff Elbel (847) 808-STYL Rockstyles.com (Vanguard) Imagine a soft-focus Andrews SistersRoches hybrid plus a fourth-part harmony and the talent to assemble a dozen-song holiday album with only two standards ("Silver Bells," "Jingle Bells") and one carol ("Little Drummer Boy"), and you'll have a fair idea of Eleni Mandell's, Becky Stark's, Inara George's, and Alex Lilly's collective charm. As befits their droll unsentimentality, the mood stays light and even somewhat ecumenical (Hanukkah gets a song all to itself). But "Unsentimental" plus "light" plus "ecumenical" in their case equals "buoyant" more often than not and "cute" only a little. And, anyway, their cutest songs (the tourism-committee-worthy "Kadoka, South Dakota," the Santabaiting "Skip the Sugar [Good Girl], and the Beach Boys-worthy "Christmas in California") are also their most detailed and catchy. – Arsenio Orteza 7 46 illinoisent \
