"Summer Rain," in 2003, and their five previous albums have all garnered critical
raves. This CD, their sixth since forming
in 1999, shows considerable growth in the
band's songwriting and arrangements,
and features its best harmony performances to date. Originally begun as a duo with
Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, Turin
Brakes grew to a quartet with the addition
of Rob Allum and Eddie Myer. We Were
Here is acoustic-based, but certainly rocks
out more than a few times. Critics have
labeled the band "future folk" or "space
folk," which is actually an appropriate
description of the new record. Imagine
Dark Side of The Moon-era Pink Floyd doing
an album with Neil Young. This is most
evident with "Sleeper," a dreamy, folkrocker which is the highlight of the record.
It speaks of challenges that face young
people in modern times: "Sleeping is easy;
waking up is hard..." Other Floydish
tracks include "Blindsided" and "Stop The
World," both of which could have fit easily
in that band's repertoire. None of this is to
say Turin Brakes are a derivative band or
lack original elements. While their influences are certainly evident, they have a
sound that seems to be all their own.
Worth checking out, especially if you like
the blend of acoustic and electric instruments with lush harmonies.

JAMES TAYLOR
The Essential
(Legacy)
One of the most soothing storytellers of
all time is long overdue for a multi-label,
career spanning compilation, and while
The Essential double disc set isn't perfect, it
generally fills the void for James Taylor.
All of the major leaguers are present with
"Sweet Baby James," "Fire And Rain,"
"You've Got A Friend" and "Shower The
People" all tying as firsts amongst equals,
while gentle gems like "Copperline" and
"Little More Time With You" find Taylor's
muse staying sharp in his twilight years.
Even so, The Essential isn't without its
faults, sometimes turning to live renditions instead of studio editions or omitting
a few notables, such as his signature treatment of "Up On The Roof." None of that
changes Taylor's enormous contribution to
the pop and folk singer/songwriter scenes
for over 45 years, but as is often the case,
record labels can't seem to get it quite
right.
