20 COVER STORY : GOO GOO DOLLS The Goo Goo Dolls started out in Buffalo , N . Y ., as a
Replacements-scruffy punk band back in 1986 , before expanding their sound via 1995 ’ s breakthrough anthem “ Name ,” then the orchestral Bic-flicking ballad “ Iris ” three years later . Still workout-trim and in great health , Johnny Rzeznik will turn 57 this December , the same month that Liliana – he and his wife Melina ’ s daughter – turns six . So naturally , lots of cross-generational thinking has been on his mind . And mortality can take on surprising new dimensions once you realize that not only will your children hopefully outlive you , but your songs – 16 # 1 and Top 10 hits ( an all-time radio record ), and over 15 million albums sold , to date – will most certainly will . And if TikTok brings his music to a whole new Gen-Z audience , hey , he ’ ll take it . No matter how unusual it might seem on the social media surface . Tom Lanham spoke to Rzeznik on a blazing Juy day .
HELLO MY NAME IS NEAL SCHON OF JOURNEY
Journey ’ s new album Freedom album makes no divide red-vs-blue political statements but lets Neal Schon ’ s warm , instantly recognizable guitar do all the talking on rollicking , rock-solid anthems like “ Holdin ’ On ,” “ Come Away With Me ,” a folk-orchestral “ Life Rolls On ,” and a surprisingly-bluesy “ Let it Rain .” It ’ s the group ’ s first record of new material since 2011 ’ s Eclipse , and one in which Pineda — initially a soundalike ringer for definitive early vocalist Steve Perry — really comes into his pneumatic own , with a more earthy style reflective of his humble Filipino roots . And it feels almost waterfall quiescent and calming to have the band back . ansonic distraction .“ So let ’ s hope that something good happens in the future for the whole world ,” Schon , a wise , seasoned 68 , says , fingers crossed . “ Because it really is a mess . So let ’ s pray for the best .” Tom Lanham spoke to the Hall of Fame guitarist last month .
