T
he summer movie season wraps up with a variety of offerings that hit just about every genre . Though there are no superheroes this month , with the long-awaited debut of Steven King ’ s The Dark Tower we could see the launch of a possible new franchise that Collider refers to as Sony ’ s the “ Connected KINGdom ” - which connects previous film adaptations of King ’ s work through The Dark Tower ' s inter-dimensional setting ( or at least through the trailer !). Currently the franchise is composed of the films The Shining ( 1980 ), Christine ( 1983 ), Cujo ( 1983 ), Misery ( 1990 ), The Shawshank Redemption ( 1994 ), Carrie ( 1976 ) and next month ’ s It , with possible reboots of The Stand and Salem ’ s Lot remaining

If you ’ re a King fan you know most of his projects take an inordinate amount of time to reach the screen and he seems to have much better luck with television , as much of his writing is better suited to the extended format . The Dark Tower
Director : Nikolaj Arcel August 4 • Rated PG-13
In and out of development since 2007 , the film brings Stephen King ’ s The Dark Tower series of seven fantasy / sci-fi / horror / wild west novels ( that also spawned a Marvel comic book series ) to the big screen . Based on the first book The Gunslinger , this film tells the story of 11-year-old Jake Chambers ( Tom Taylor ), an adventurous boy who discovers another dimension . Following the mystery , he is spirited away to an alternate plane where he encounters the last Gunslinger , Roland Deschain ( Idris Elba ), who is on a quest to save the Dark Tower , which holds the dimensions of the universe together . Roland must save the world from an extinction caused by the evil Man In Black ( Matthew McConaughey ), who has eternally battled Deschain and wants to destroy the tower . With various monsters and The Man In Black hot on their trail , the unlikely duo must fight an epic battle between good and evil . The film also stars Claudia Kim , Fran Kranz , Abbey Lee , Jackie Earl Haley and Katheryn Winnick . There is also a rumored Dark Tower TV series in the works that further explore this universe .
Good Time
Director : Joshua Safdie and Ben Safdie August 11 • Rated R
After a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother Nick ( played by co-director Ben Safdie ) in jail , Constantine Nikas ( Robert Pattinson in a transformative role ) embarks on a twisted odyssey through New York City ' s seedy underworld in an increasingly desperate and dangerous attempt to get his brother out of jail in this gritty , raw , crime thriller by the Safdie brothers . Over the course of one adrenaline-filled night , Constantine finds himself on a mad descent into violence and mayhem as he races against the clock to save his brother and himself . Jennifer Jason Leigh , Barkhad Abdi , Buddy Duress and Cliff Moylan round out the cast .

Director : Destin Cretton August 11 • Rated PG-13 Based on her best-selling memoir , Jeanette Walls ( Brie Larson ) and her three siblings must learn to take care of themselves as their responsibility-averse and free-spirited parents both inspire and inhibit them . When sober , the children ' s brilliant and charismatic father ( Woody Harrelson ) captured their imagination , teaching them physics , geology , and how to embrace life fearlessly . But when he drank , he was dishonest and destructive . Meanwhile , their mother ( Naomi Watts ) abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn ' t want to take on the work of raising a family . With their family being profoundly dysfunctional the Walls children learned to take care of each other , eventually finding the determination to leave and create successful lives in New York . Eventually , their parents followed them , choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered . Max Greenfield , Sara Snook , Ella Anderson , Dominic Bogart and Shree Crooks also appear .

Director : Geremy Jaspar August 18 • Rated R White , plus-sized , aspiring rapper Patricia Dombrowski , aka Patti Cake $ ( Danielle Macdonald ), is fighting an unlikely quest for glory in her downtrodden New Jersey hometown where her life is falling apart . Patti tries to reach the big time in the hip-hop scene with original and affecting music . Cheered on by her grandmother and only friends , Jheri and Basterd , Patti also shoulders her mother ' s heartaches and misfortunes . The film premiered at Sundance with cheers and a standing ovation for Danielle Macdonald ’ s performance in the
