Jonny Lang arrived on the blues scene as a 15-year-old blues prodigy. Riding the‘ 90s blues revival, he played large arenas with the likes of legends like Buddy Guy. Earning a platinum album Lie To Me( A & M), with impressive guitar licks and a worldweary voice that belied his age and experiences, Lang joined the group of teen blues stars who outsold and attracted more visibility than the seasoned blues legends that inspired them. The fact that all of these young blues stars were Caucasian wasn’ t a coincidence, but a requirement for them to be positioned as unexpectedly gifted musicians. With not much substance to go with the flash, Jonny was often associated more with his technical guitar skills rather than a fully developed musicianship, but that didn’ t stop him from enjoying a successful two-decade blues career.. Now 36-year ' s- old, he ' s delivered his seventh studio album

It’ s clear that Jonny has matured way beyond the sometimes superficial sheen of his teen years, and this album showcases his musical development well. From the soulful kick of the opening tune“ Make It Move,” to the power groove of the rock anthem“ Bitter End,” he showcases his polished skills.

Despite listing Robert Johnson and Howlin’ Wolf as early blues influences that he drew from on this album, there is scant evidence of any form of blues on Signs, save the title track, which laces blues undertones through the familiar rock focus. Signs displays rock, funk, pop and hints of soul, but very little blues. Jonny isn’ t the first or only musician positioned as a blues artist who borrows from other genres but unfortunately he’ s one of a growing number that maintain the status of a blues hero without paying much allegiance to it ' s culture or history. Jonny Lang performs at House of Blues at 7:30 pm. on September 23.
