INTRODUCING THE INSTITUTE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES GRAND CHALLENGES The ways we organise and live in our communities influence life chances and shape futures. From the social and environmental effects of climate change, to the impact of technology on humans and their relationships, we confront challenges that endanger basic human needs and life opportunities. Now more than ever, these complex questions about how we should live require radical responses and we can no longer look to the experts in individual academic fields or research areas to provide solutions. The Grand Challenges lectures offer a distinctive range of perspectives and topics from influential thinkers. We invite speakers to offer their fresh insights and to point towards new interdisciplinary possibilities for understanding and tackling the political, ethical and intellectual problems that we face in the world today. Professor Andy Stirling, University of Sussex 4 The 2017-8 programme included lectures from Professor Kate Pickett on The Immorality of Inequality, Darren Henley; Chief Executive of the Arts Council Can Creativity Save Us? and George Monbiot, Out of the Wreckage: A New Politics for an Age of Crisis. 2018-9 promises another exciting series with more great speakers and questions, topics, and provocations. keele.ac.uk/ilas/ grandchallenges Professor Kate Pickett, York University Professor Shane O’Neill, Keele University
