L’ estetica giapponese è considerata una parte integrante della cultura nipponica e della vita quotidiana dei giapponesi. Sebbene questi ultimi abbiano avuto per molti secoli una grande produzione artistica, la disciplina filosofica corrispondente all’ estetica occidentale non venne studiata sino alla fine del XIX secolo. La maggior parte dei concetti dell’ estetica giapponese fa riferimento alle nozioni del Buddismo( in particolare Zen) sulla transitorietà ed evanescenza della vita. Yùgen è un concetto che appare agli inizi del X secolo. Questo concetto si potrebbe tradurre come” Profondo e misterioso”; esso non serve solamente a descrivere il fascino delle cose in penombra di cui non si riesce a conoscere del tutto i limiti e i particolari, ma viene usato anche con senso più ampio, per indicare ciò che, essendo oscuro, è insondabile, misterioso e imperscrutabile. Difatti, un’ altra definizione di Yùgen implica nell’ arte giapponese le capacità misteriose che non possono essere descritte a parole.
Japanese aesthetics is regarded as an integral part of Japanese culture and everyday life. Although Japan enjoyed many centuries of great artistic production, people didn’ t study the philosophical discipline connected to Western aesthetics until the end of the nineteenth century. Most of the concepts of Japanese aesthetics are connected to the Buddhist( especially Zen) notions of transience and evanescence of life. Yùgen is a concept that appeared at the beginning of the tenth century. This concept can be translated as something that is“ deep and mysterious”. Not only does it describe the beauty of objects in dim light, whose shapes and details we can’ t fully perceive, but it also has a deeper meaning, mostly indicating what is obscure and therefore unfathomable, mysterious and therefore inscrutable. In fact, in Japanese art, another definition for Yûgen is the range of mysterious abilities that can’ t be described with words.
