But paring down possessions too
radically might actually cause
people more anxiety than relief.
Belongings represent memories
and dreams. Hang on to that
guitar, and you hold on to the
hope of making it to rock-star
status. (Some day.)
Things that are emotionally
meaningful to us, even if
they’re not entirely useful or
practical, bring us happiness.
So rather than just going
minimal and throwing things
out, first it’s helpful to try
prioritising, along with storage
solutions.
Professor Russell Belk, a leading
expert in the meaning of
possessions, tells us that this
is a healthier behaviour than
letting things go too hastily.
First, we can try temporarily
living without them. It helps
us reconsider, and only move
on when we feel ready. Maybe in
a year or two. (Or in the case of
that guitar, maybe never.)
