IICandM Accreditation Coaching and Mentoring Core Competencies | Page 17

1. Supports and challenges during the planning stage by encouraging the Client to ‘do it now’; and challenges, if not now, then when and what has to happen first.

2. Provides the Client with the opportunity to plan without interference from the Coach or Mentor.

3. Provides the Client with the opportunity to plan with guidance from the Mentor.

4. Where appropriate, reminds the Client about major insights, patterns, solutions and ideas that were generated throughout the session, including past successes.

5. Where appropriate, helps the Client to create and implement a plan with results that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-framed; and adjust this where necessary.

6. Encourages a Client’s self-discipline, responsibility and accountability for what they say they are going to do; by helping the client to define an accountability measure.

7. Keeps the Client focused and on track by reviewing progress, holding attention on the goal for the session and the desired outcome, as well as agreed-upon course or courses of action.

8. When appropriate, asks the Client to articulate what results they have noticed and/or to state how far they have come with the completion of their plan.

9. Encourages the Client to stay focused on previously generated goals and their commitment to those goals.

10. In order to ensure forward movement, works with the Client to address and overcome any obstacles that are in the way of previously set goals and plans.

11. Positively challenges the Client when he/she did not take agreed-upon actions.

Where this is applicable to your Skills Assessment (as part of your Accreditation application) the IIC&M accept that there was no previous session, so this point will relate to the actions that the client either had with themselves or with their own coach or mentor.

12. Acknowledges the Client’s successes and their realisations/learning.
