A PoV on the IIC Industrial Internet Reference Architecture
Flexibility
The ability to add new devices, sensors, protocols,
data formats, security and regulatory policies with
minimal or no additional effort
Maintainability
The ability to roll out new versions of the IIS platform
with minimal disruption
The ability to monitor each sub-system with respect
to service availability, correct functioning and fault
isolation
The ability to ensure only authenticated and
authorized access to IIS services and data and
compliance with all regulatory requirements
Ensuring integrity of stored and streaming data
The ability to provide fine-grained policy-driven
control over access to data
Ability to redact, mask, perturb and anonymize all
privacy sensitive data
Resilience to varying data ingestion volumes, data
rate surges/spikes, varying network conditions, DoS
attacks, etc. and isolate faulty components
Disaster recovery capabilities
IIS will be part of various Safety Critical processes and
safety is a key concern. It is important to implement
safeguards and mechanisms to limit unsafe behavior
of the IIS.

Processes for Assuring System Characteristics
An IIS is subject to compliance and regulatory requirements and will be audited for compliance.
Necessary evidence must be given to assure that system characteristics have been engineered in
and the platform is being operated in an appropriate manner. The IIRA recommends the use of
standardized processes for Systems Engineering, Systems Operations and Systems Auditing.
