Architecting the Smart Grid Using the Industrial Internet of Things
3. Develop an OpenFMB Framework Standard within a recognized Standards Setting
Organization (SSO): The OpenFMB PAP team coordinated with the North American
Energy Standards Board (NAESB) to develop an OpenFMB specification and reference
implementation. These standards are expected to be finalized in 2015Q1.
4. Identify and work with one or more test beds: OpenFMB quickly gained notoriety
within the Smart Grid test bed community and several test beds signed up. These
microgrid test beds include:
1) Duke Energy Mount Holly
2) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)
3) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
4) Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) End-to-End Test Laboratory
5) SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory
6) CPS Energy (through a collaborative effort led by IIC)
Three IIC members—RTI, National Instruments and Cisco—are applying the precepts of
the IIRA to the microgrid challenge. The Communication and Control Testbed for
Microgrid Applications provides a peer-to-peer communication framework to
interconnect powerful edge intelligence controllers and analytics nodes. RTI, NI and Cisco
have implemented an instance of the IIRA for this Microgrid Testbed program using RTI’s
Connext® platform based on the standard Data Distribution Service (DDS) protocol, NI’s
CompactRIO® intelligent controllers and Cisco’s Connected Grid Routers. Phase 1 of the
testbed program is underway, developing a proof-of-concept demonstration in Austin,
Texas. Phase 2 of the program will be a more complete implementation of a microgrid in
the simulation labs at Southern California Edison. Once satisfied with the security and
safety of the framework, Phase 3 will involve the integration of a real microgrid in San
Antonio Texas with CPS Energy, the municipal utility.
5. Provide a live demonstration of OpenFMB exercising the use cases: The OpenFMB PAP
team planned demonstration events for the SGIP’s Annual Conference in New Orleans
November 3-5, 2015 and for the annual DistribuTech event February 9-11, 2016 in
Orlando Florida. The team also developed two cartoons to include as props at the
demonstration events. The first cartoon provides an overview of the OpenFMB
Framework. The second cartoon provides a narrative for the three use cases.
