Architecting the Smart Grid Using the Industrial Internet of Things Figure 1. A Microgrid uses peer-to-peer data communication and edge intelligence to automate local power generation and balance against the power load. Microgrids help to integrate intermittent energy sources like solar and wind. The OpenFMB™ Framework is the first EnergyIoT™ field system addressing the need for reliable, safe, upgradeable distributed intelligence on the grid. OpenFMB directly addresses the decentralization issue facing utilities and regulators by leveraging existing electricity information models (ex. IEC 61968/61970, IEC 61850, MultiSpeak and SEP 2) and creating a data-centric “bus” on the grid to allow devices to talk directly to one another. The initial use cases targeted by OpenFMB are microgrid focused, and the OpenFMB framework is closely adhering to the Industrial Internet Consortium’s Industrial Internet Reference Architecture. 4. THE INDUSTRIAL INTERNET REFERENCE ARCHITECTURE AND CONNECTIVITY The Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) published the Industrial Internet Reference Architecture (IIRA) to help guide the development of Industrial Internet Systems (IIS) and to drive interoperability and security across a broad span of industries. The Industrial Internet Reference Architecture covers architecture viewpoints, from business needs to functions and implementatio
