Raising:
Successful
children CHILDREN
We are living in times where raising children
certainly isn’t an easy feat.
[ WRITTEN BY: ROCHELLE FLORES ]
We are constantly
bombarded with social media
influences and the gaming
industry that grab at our
children’s attention from
every nook and cranny.
Yet, amongst this mayhem, as
Muslims, we are constantly
worried about the success
of our children both in this
world and the next. We
always wonder, “Are we
doing a good enough job
raising them?”, “Are we doing
the right thing?”, “Are we too
strict? Or too lenient?”
These and many other
questions cross our minds, as
we struggle the path called
‘parenthood’.
What is success? To some,
it may be attaining that 1st
school of choice at SEA or
passing all subjects with
good grades. It may be
acquiring a job that pays well
or owning your own home. Yet
for others success may simply
be having your children be in a
better place than you are now,
breaking a cycle or just being
happy. Success isn’t the same
for everyone, but as Muslims,
raising successful children should
mean the same thing - raising our
children upon the Deen of Islam,
In Shaa Allah.
We must always look to the
Qur’an and Sunnah in establishing
what it means to raise successful
children and in Surah Luqman,
we learn valuable pieces of advice
on how and what we must teach
our children to help them attain
this success.
“…O my son! Join not in worship
others with God. Verily! Joining
others in worship with God is a
great wrong indeed.”
[Surah Luqman:13]
Firstly, we notice that in this
Surah, Luqman addresses his son
‘O my Son’, expressing love and
kindness from father to son. It is
of utmost importance to teach our
children that the most important
part of their lives is and should
always be belief in Allah alone
and that it is He Who should be
worshipped alone without any
partner. Of course, we should
not just preach to our children,
but show them what we preach
as well. As parents, we are the
first role models, and therefore
worshipping Allah alone must
begin with us.
There is no better time than now,
during this worldwide lockdown
in the month of Ramadan, to teach
our children the importance of
praying together as a family and
establishing the 5 daily salaah.
“And We have enjoined upon
man [care] for his parents..”
[Surah Luqman: 14]
Teaching children to be dutiful,
kind, caring and loving towards
parents, and by extension, all
family members are key in
helping children to become
