An important part of Prophetic medicine is treatment using the verses of the Qur’an, the names of Allah and supplications taught by the Prophet (SAW). This is referred to as ‘Ruqyah’ This type of treatment requires a great deal of belief and Tawakkul. What is being said on the tongue should be in sync with what is firmly believed in the heart and seeking refuge in Allah is a must. Ruqyah is commonly used to treat pain, ulcers and wounds, the evil eye, psychological disorders and diseases of the heart.Surahs such as Faatihah, Ikhlaas, Falaq, Naas, Ayaat- ul-kursi and the last 2 or 3 verses of Surah Baqarah are well known for their uses as protection and in treatment. (see Supplications & Treatment with Ruqyah from the Qur’an and Sunnah by Dr Sa’eed bin Ali al Qahtani). In conclusion we see that Modern science is slowly catching up to what we were taught over 1400 years ago and continues to be revised and updated while the Qur’an and Sunnah remains unchanged yet still full of in-depth mysteries and cures that are yet to be discovered through doctors, scientists and raaq’is (those who perform Ruqyah) of Islamic medicine. No doubt by the permission of Allah they will uncover much more and become far more advanced in the medical field once they keep their intentions sincere, beliefs pure and continue to use Prophetic Medicine as the basis of all research.
