The Sunnah of miswak
The Prophet (SAW) said,
“Make it a habit to perform miswak
as it is a means of cleansing the
mouth and a means of attaining
the pleasure of Allah.”
While the practice of this beautiful
Sunnah has become rare mainly since
the advent of modern-day toothpaste and
toothbrushes, scientific benefits have been
emerging recently regarding its use.
The fibrous branches of the Salvadora
Persica plant have been mentioned by the
World Health Organisation as substantial
means for oral hygiene. This miswak
contains fluoride and was found to release
a significant amount of calcium and
phosphorus into the water which promotes
enamel mineralization. It also contains
sulphur which has antibacterial properties,
Vitamin C which aids in tissue repair and
healing, silica that acts as an abrasive to
help remove stains and tannins and has
an astringent property which helps reduce
clinically detectable gingivitis. (source:

relief to joint pains, muscles spasms, clears
sinuses, treat mental disorders, improve
blood circulation and can fight against
many dermatological diseases.
Zamzam water
The Prophet (SAW) said the best water
on the face of the earth is zam zam. In it
is food for nourishment and healing for
illness.” (mu’jam al Kabeer 11011-grade
Hasan according to Albaani)
From a rigorous study of water sampling
in Europe and Saudi Arabia, it concludes
that Zamzam water has a fluoride
substance that has the ability to eliminate
germs and bacteria similar to the ones we
find in conventional medicine. It has a
The Sunnah of Tahneek
When the Prophet (SAW)’s son was born
he named him Ibraheem and did Tahneek
(Sahih Muslim). Tahneek refers to the
action of chewing dates and rubbing it
inside the mouth of the newborn. A little
Honey can also be used in the absence of
dates.
A scientific study published in British
Medical Journal (June 1995) indicates that
giving a newborn child sugar can reduce
the feeling of pain and aid in healing
procedures like circumcision and blood
tests.
Other researchers in New Zealand whose
work was published in ‘The Lancet’ found
that a dose of sugar given in the form
of a gel rubbed into the cheek is a cheap
and effective way to protect premature
babies from suffering brain damage. It
can reverse hypoglycaemia (low blood
sugar level) that affects 1 in 10 babies
that are born prematurely. Based on the
results they say it should be a ‘first-line
treatment’.
The Sunnah of cupping
The Prophet ((SAW)) said: “Healing
is in three things: cupping, a gulp of
honey and cauterisation (branding
with fire) but I forbid my followers
to use cauterisation.”
Cupping has been an ancient practice that
is becoming increasingly popular today,
especially among athletes. Though there
isn’t much scientific evidence ‘yet’ it brings
high concentration of calcium that helps
cure fatigue and is absorbed by the bones.
According to an extensive study from a
German scientist in Munich, he has proved
that Zamzam water has successfully
strengthened the human cells within the
body. (source: drhealthbenefits.com)
Black Seed
The Prophet (SAW) said “ Blackseed is a
healing for all diseases except as-saam.”
when Aisha r.a asked,”what is As-saam?”
He said, “Death.” (Sahih Bukhari)
By Dr Mercola: More than 650 peer-
researched studies looked into Black seed.
It is published in Asian Pacific Journal that
it is widely used as a liver tonic, diuretic,
appetite stimulant and in the treatment of
skin disorders to name a few.
In Old Latin, it is considered a miracle herb
called ‘Panacea’ which means ‘cure all’.
It was used for immune system support,
digestive health, respiratory issues, kidney
and liver support and heart health. The
roasted seeds were used to stop vomiting
and its oil was used as an antiseptic.
Research published in ‘Drug Discovery
Today’ mentions “Thymoquinone” that
is extracted from the black seed to be
effective against cancers in the blood,
lungs, kidney, liver, prostate, breast,
cervix, colon and skin. The thymoquinone
was even found to be superior to well-
known asthma drugs. The anti-asthmatic
effect of black seed extract shows it
acts as a bronchodilator. Black seed is
significant in weight loss and reduced
waist circumference. It lowers heart rate
and blood pressure. Black seed also helps
with diabetes as it decreases ‘oxidative
stress’ that may decrease the efficiency of
pancreatic cells which control production
and release of insulin.
Honey
“There issues from within their
bodies a drink of varying colours
wherein is healing for men: Verily in
this is a sign for those of thought.”
Qur’an (16:69)
Buckwheat honey increases anti-oxidant
value in the blood which reduces risks
of heart attacks, strokes, some type of
cancers and may also promote eye health.
It lowers LDL cholesterol and raises HDL
(good) cholesterol, it lowers blood pressure
and triglycerides which are major factors
for heart disease. It helps arteries in the
heart to dilate increasing blood flow to the
heart and prevents blood clots. (source:

Evaluation of 26 studies done on wound
care and honey shows it is most effective
at healing partial thickness burns and
wounds that became infected after surgery.
There was an astounding 97%success at
treating diabetic foot ulcers and also helps
treat skin conditions such as psoriasis,
haemorrhoids etc. Studies also show
that honey is better than common cough
medications.
Olive oil
The Prophet (SAW) said, “Eat olive
oil and anoint yourselves with it for
it is from a blessed tree.” (Tirmidhi)
Olive oil is made up of 73% monosaturated
fat called ‘oleic acid’ which is extremely
healthy. It reduces inflammation, has
vitamin E and K and loaded with powerful
antioxidants. It prevents cholesterol from
becoming oxidized. In a study of over
84,000 subjects, it is the only source of
monosaturated fat to reduce the risk of
stroke and heart disease. It may fight
Alzheimer’s as there is a substance in olive
oil that removes plaque from the brain
cells which is a key feature of Alzheimer’s.

“We shall show them our signs on
the furthest horizons and within
themselves until it becomes clear
to them it is the truth. Is it not
sufficient that your Lord is witness
over all things?” (41:53)
Ruqyah
“And we sent down from the
Qur’an that which is a healing and
a mercy to those who believe.”
