possessing knowledge of previous revelations and
scriptures. Waraqah confirmed that the experience
was in fact a visit from Angel Jibraeel (AS) and
that Muhammad (SAS) was the expected Prophet
of Allah. Khadijah (RA) accepted the revelation as
truth and was the first person to accept Islam. She
supported her husband in every trial and hardship
he faced as the last Prophet of Allah (SAS); the
opposition of his people became harsh and brutal
but his faith and support from his wife were
principal in his success. Khadija (RA) spent all of
her wealth to support the cause of Islam, helping
her loving husband to achieve his goals. When the
Prophet (SAS) and his family were banished to
the hills outside of Makkah, his wife accompanied
him; during those three years of hardship and
deprivation, Khadija (RA) eventually lost her life.
The Prophet (SAS) lost his beloved wife and
friend, the first person to accept Islam, his pillar
of support and strength, his one and only Khadija
(RA). She had been a refuge from all of his troubles
and through her kind heartedness and compassion,
the best company in his times of suffering. He had
loved her very much, so much so that the year she
passed away came to be known as the “Year of
Sorrow”.
The Prophet (SAS) would look forward to visits
from Khadija’s sister Hala, after her passing,

because of the similarities in their voices. He
missed her dearly and mentioned her often; it is
narrated that A’ishah (RA), another beloved wife
of the Prophet (SAS) said“I did not feel jealous
of any of the wives of the Prophet (SAS) as much
as I did of Khadija (RA) though I did not see her,
but the Prophet (SAS) used to mention her very
often” [Bukhari]. A’ishah (RA) became weary of
hearing of her all the time and often felt a sense
of indignation, once angrily saying “O Prophet
of Allah! Why is it that of all the old women of
Quraysh you keep mentioning only one, she who
died a long time ago? Allah has blessed you with
better wives than her since then. You mention
Khadija as if there is no woman but her on earth”
On hearing this, the Prophet (SAS) was visibly
angered and A’ishah (RA) felt limp at seeing how
much it upset him. She vowed at that moment
never to speak another word against Khadija (RA).
The Prophet of Allah (SAS) spoke and said “O
A’ishah! The truth of the matter is that no one can
be better than Khadijah (RA). She believed in me
when the whole world refuted me and she attested
to my trueness when the whole world accused
me of falsehood. She offered me compassion and
loyalty when all had forsaken me. O A’ishah! What
can I do? Love for her runs in my blood and is
nestled in my heart.”
