Pillars of Islam General The religious practice of Islam, which translates to “submission to God”, is based on tenets that are known as the Five Pillars of Islam. This is the basis or foundation on which the religion stands. 2 1 Salaat Shahadah Performing daily ritual prayers Sincerely reciting the Muslim profession of faith Muslims perform five obligatory prayers a day. Each prayer does not take more than a few minutes to perform. Prayer in Islam is a direct link between the worshipper and God. There are no intermediaries between God and the worshipper. The testimony of faith is saying with conviction, “La ilaha illa-llah, Muhammadu-rasulu-llah” which means “There is no true God (deity) but Allah and Muhammad is the final Messenger (Prophet) of God.” 3 Zakaat Charity for the Poor & Needy The meaning of the word zakaat is both ‘purification’ and ‘growth.’ Giving zakaat means ‘giving a specified percentage on certain properties to certain classes of needy people.’ 4 Saum Fasting during Ramadan “O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it has been prescribed to those before you in order that you may attain taqwa” (2:183) Muslims fast in order to attain ‘Taqwa’or consciousness of God.Taqwa is an Islamic term for being conscious & cognizant of Allah. 8 | Ihsaan | Issue 1 5 Hajj Pilgrimage to Makkah The annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah is an obligation once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able to perform it.
