IGNYTE Magazine Issue 03 | Page 13

The thriving trend of low quality, fast fashion is becoming evermore disturbing. Fashion labels are turning out new stock on an hourly basis to feed our ever-growing consumerist culture. Fortunately there are an increasing number of fashion designers dedicated to a new business model and to adopting more sustainable production methods, such as waterless dyeing, using waste as a raw material, and developing innovative solutions to the textile waste problem.

As consumers, we must 'reduce our choices'. We have become accustomed to a large selection of clothes to wear, when in reality, we only wear a few pieces of what is in our closet.

Textile dyeing is the second largest polluter of water globally and it takes around 2,000 gallons of water to make a typical pair of jeans. Every second, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned. Therefore, not only is reducing our choices helping social and environmental change within the textile industry, but it might also be critical to our health and well being in the long run.

Our third issue of IGNYTE Magazine is about sustainable fashion and innovations. We are introducing you to three women who are passionate about the environment first, fashion next. Meet Livia Firth, CEO of Eco-Age, Maristela Soares, CEO of MABI Swimwear, and Maiya McGonagle, CEO of House Of Maiya.

On behalf of the IGNYTE Team, we hope you enjoy this issue and engage with our efforts to help save the planet. Sounds cliché? Not anymore.
