When the speaker is physically present we can watch body language to further enhance understanding. In remote situations we must work twice as hard by concentrating and paraphrasing to properly understand.
There are rules to active listening:
Be present in the moment, pay attention and validate understanding.
Have an open mind while focused on the speaker.
Make room to listen without interruptions, prejudice, or judgement.
These rules increase:
A listeners ability to understand and reduces the potential for conflict. We can hear underlying emotions.
Creates an atmosphere of trust. The speaker has an improved sense of inclusion and increased willingness to contribute.
Boosts motivation and productivity.
