Broadening the Mind

“ Travel is fatal to prejudice , bigotry , and narrowmindedness , and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts . Broad , wholesome , charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one ’ s lifetime .” Mark Twain
Do you agree ?

Thomas Denton ( aged 14 ) is preparing for a trip of a lifetime to Swaziland with his school and describes the commitment that is involved :
In July 2018 , I will be going with a group of other students on a World Challenge expedition to Swaziland . The expedition will involve community work at a local school or Neighbourhood Care Point ( NCP ) for orphaned children . Swaziland has the highest rate of HIV amongst the adult population in Africa and over 180 000 AIDS orphans . NCPs have been built to support these orphans . They provide care and support , food and education for the orphans . While we are there our work will involve tasks such as painting , construction , refurbishment , teaching , tree planting , conservation and agricultural work .
Part of our challenge is to raise the funds for the trip ourselves . To do this I am doing jobs for family , friends and neighbours including gardening , gutter cleaning and dog walking . I am also doing car boot sales , supermarket bag packing and asking friends and family to use my easyfundraising page for their online shopping . The trip will give us the opportunity to experience life in LEDCs ( lower economic developed countries ). It will develop our team work , leadership skills and decision making , while pushing us to new limits and gaining life experience .
