GLACIAL PACE : WHERE DOES THE REST OF CANADA STAND ON IGAMING ?

Ontario may be the largest state , but the rest of Canada represents a huge opportunity to igaming businesses . Daniel O ’ Boyle rounds up where things stand in the country ’ s other 12 provinces and territories
ONTARIO BLAZED a trail within Canada by opening up its igaming market to licensed operators , breaking with the model undertaken by every other state offering online gaming , in which a provincial lottery holds a monopoly on the vertical .
But with specific results now available , will any other provinces follow Ontario ’ s lead in implementing a licensed igaming regime ?
The short answer is there ’ s been little sign of this up to now . While some provinces have taken steps to offer more competitive offerings on their monopoly sites – particularly following the nationwide legalisation of single-event sports betting – none have taken serious action in allowing for more operators to enter the market .
Quebec Loto-Québec , the only permitted gaming operator in the province , offers sports betting and a range of online casino products . During its 2021-22 financial year , the lottery brought in CA $ 125.6m in revenue from online gaming .
In its 2021-22 annual report , Loto-Québec chair Ann MacDonald said it was monitoring the changing circumstances in the online sector and would continue to take advantage of any opportunities therein .
