GAME DESIGN Q&A:
RIKARD HERLITZ, CTO,
GOO TECHNOLOGIES
Stockholm-based Goo Technologies is pioneering the use of WebGL,
a component within HTML5 that allows for the delivery of rich 3D content
online without the need for a major install or plug-in. We discussed the
potential of the tool to create more engaging and immersive campaigns
and products for iGaming operators with co-founder and CTO Rikard Herlitz.
How did you come to found and start
up Goo Technologies?
It was twofold. One, I had spent a lot of
years in the gaming industry and always
wondered why other industries were so far
behind when it came to real-time graphics.
I saw an opportunity to bring this kind of
tech outside of the gaming space. Two, the
holy grail of being able to deploy rich 3D to
everyone through one common platform,
the browser, was finally within reach with
the WebGL standard, and we took a bet
on it becoming the API everyone would
support. It’s a bet I’m glad we took.
large install locally to a device. With WebGL,
the operator or software provider is for the
first time able to create breathtaking graphics
and game changing interaction online without
the need of a major install or third party
application/plug-in, and even use it to improve
the funnel and also the customer loyalty.
So what exactly is WebGL, and how
does it differ from the previously
available technologies?
WebGL (Web Graphics Library) is a Javascript
API for rendering hardware-accelerated
graphics in any compatible web browser
“Previously, there was no way to access the full
power of the graphics cards from inside a web
browser without installing a plugin such as
Flash or Unity.”
3D has been around for years – why has
it failed to gain significant traction in
the iGaming space thus far?
Given the nature of the iGaming business, it’s
crucial to provide the gambling service online
in order to ensure low drop-off rates and
funnel the traffic to
