Chapter 3: Betting and connected portable devices
Paul Turner, marketing director at Sporting Index, said: “The new mobile site is a best-in-class product
that has been developed to give our client base a faster and easy-to-use Sporting Index experience.
“For the first time, clients using mobiles will be able to take advantage of partial cash outs to better
manage their positions, in addition to a dedicated in-play area for maximum excitement while on the
move.”
3.3 Betting apps
Apple’s decision to allow specialist apps from the likes of Betfair and Paddy Power in its App Store
in 2010 onwards boosted visibility for the sector and offered a lucrative new delivery channel
for providers. Betfair became the first major betting company to offer a downloadable gambling
application from the App Store. Since then, all the major sports betting companies have produced
apps across a multitude of connected devices which has led to a dramatic increase in wagers.
Meanwhile, within the Google Play Store, a ban on gambling apps continues, making establishing a
foothold with Android gamblers (the largest share of the UK smartphone market) an ongoing issue.
However, with more than one in five (22%) of gambling apps being abandoned after download
without a deposit being made, operators are missing out on bigger revenue streams. Whilst download
volume is indicative of exposure, customer interaction and retention is paramount to longevity in the
market. As download volume represents the first interaction only, brands need to consider strategies
for ongoing engagement and methods to minimise lead time between interactions.
